Duplex Scanning in Vascular Disorders

We are moving forward in many areas as evidenced by this volume. I hope that the detailed information provided by the technologists will complement my contributions and make this a useful bible for the vascular laboratory. Watching the technology grow and the technologists mature with these advances has been a great experience. What of the future? It is clear that quantitative three-dimensional imaging is going to play a key role in many areas. For example, with the advent of endovascular grafting of aortic aneurysms, the need for inexpensive long-term quantitative studies of outcome are essential. The need for this is obvious given the reports of spontaneous rupture in patients who were thought to have been successfully treated. We now have the capability of evaluating many aspects of these grafts and the changes that occur, not only with the grafts themselves, but with the native aorta as well. The future will indeed be exciting for this field.

The Care of Wounds

This is an exciting time in wound care and there have been many new developments in the last few years, including new approaches as well as systematic reviews and guidelines. Much of this is reflected in this third edition of The Care of Wounds and as a result, several of the chapters have been rewritten rather than updated. I also believe that many of those involved in caring for patients with wounds are more sophisticated in their approach to the subject. One might ask why we need yet another textbook of vascular surgery. This is a perfectly reasonably question and the answer is because no book exists that offers comprehensive knowledge, both theoretical and practical, to every level of vascular surgeon. Buying books is expensive and it is therefore important that such books are of use to all of those who may wish to read them. The aim of this book is to be as useful to the vascular trainee as to the established vascular consultant. To this end the editors have enlisted and given a clear brief to leading practitioners in the field. All of the topics that one would normally expect to see in such a book are included and the text is sufficiently referenced to make it authoritative. Pictures and figures are also used but not extensively and are not a major selling point of this volume.
