It’s a safe assumption that you didn’t purchase this seventh edition of Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach for its foreword. It’s probable that most of you will never read these musings. The value of this text lies in its succeeding pages, in the collective knowledge and wisdom conveyed by its authors, and in its ability to help you provide better care for your patients. It’s also a safe assumption that many—perhaps most—readers had not yet begun their careers in pharmacy when the first edition of Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach was published in 1988. This seventh edition will mark the text’s 20th anniversary. Noting this milestone, it’s appropriate to reflect on a few “then and now” comparisons.

As we, the editors, worked on the 8th edition of Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology, we were struck by Monsieur Karr's quote from 160 years ago. This textbook continues to change and evolve. The incomparable Ted Harris, who was editor-in-chief of the 7th edition, has stepped down, leaving Gary Firestein to fill his shoes. For the first time, a European editor, Iain McInnes, joined the group and helped create a truly international edition. Full color was introduced, new chapter formats were designed to assure a consistent look and feel for each topic, and algorithms for diagnosis and treatment as well as key point boxes were included. In addition, new authors were added to the list of luminaries that already contribute to the book, and there was a major effort to provide greater availability through electronic versions of reference material and on-line access.
Concepts of Epidemiology - Raj S. Bhopal
This is an excellent introduction. Raj Bhopal’s approach is conceptual—he describes and explains the underlying concepts and methods of epidemiology with clarity and with apt examples, and simple, elegant illustrations. Frequently throughout the text he asks penetrating questions that will test the limits of his readers’ intellectual capacity—an admirable feature that other authors could copy with benefit to themselves and their readers. All the essentials are here: the person-population dyad, variation, error, bias, confounding, causality, the spectrum of disease, the ‘iceberg’ concept, risk and its relationship to disease frequency, study design, the ethical framework within which we practise epidemiology and conduct research, the relationship of epidemiology to other
